Our Mission
Preventing Lower-Leg Amputations
“Preventing lower-leg amputations through early intervention and restored blood flow.”
South Texas Vascular Institute is a vascular surgery practice built around an in-house Office-Based Lab. Dr. Ralph Brookshire and our team diagnose and treat conditions of the arteries and veins without sending you to a hospital. On-site vascular imaging helps us find narrowed or blocked blood vessels early — when treatment can still help.
Catching a circulation problem sooner can help reduce the risk of losing a toe, foot, or leg. That is the reason our practice exists.

Trust the Board Certified Expert
“Board Certification Means Proven Expertise. It’s Your Best Protection.”
Not every doctor who treats blood-flow problems is a vascular surgeon. Dr. Ralph Brookshire is double board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery, in both General Surgery and General Vascular Surgery. Dr. Brookshire is the first board-certified vascular surgeon to establish a private practice focused on peripheral vascular disease in the Rio Grande Valley — and the only one in Edinburg — offering medical management, minimally invasive endovascular treatment, and open surgical repair, all from one team.
Fellowship Trained. Vascular Focused. Patient Driven.

Narrowed leg arteries that cause pain, cramping, or slow-healing wounds.

Carotid Artery Disease
Narrowed neck arteries that raise the risk of stroke.

Why Patients Choose Our Office
In-House Vascular Ultrasound & Office-Based Lab
Most vascular problems start quietly — a little cramping, a heavy feeling in the legs. Our Office-Based Lab (OBL) brings the ultrasound, the diagnosis, and many treatments into one visit, in one building, in Edinburg. You will not need to travel to a hospital or wait weeks between appointments for results.
Before Any Surgery
Before any surgery on arteries or veins, get a second opinion.
If a hospital or another doctor has recommended surgery, talk to a board-certified vascular surgeon first. Dr. Brookshire will review your case, your imaging, and your options — including whether a less invasive treatment could work instead.

The Full Spectrum of Vascular Care, One Team
Circulation problems rarely need the same treatment twice. We start with the least invasive option that works, and only go further when it's necessary.
Medical Management
Medication, lifestyle changes, and monitoring for early-stage disease.
Minimally Invasive Treatment
Endovascular procedures performed through a small access point, often the same day.
Open Surgical Repair
When needed, Dr. Brookshire performs surgical bypass and repair himself.
